Canadian. Born in Jonquière, Québec (1965).
Lives and works Montréal.
The most recent works of Elmyna Bouchard use the stamping technique, composed of a single pattern per image repeated creating monochrome figures and surfaces made with a small hand-draw welded device. These highly textured drawings spontaneously evoke the delicateness of lace, textile or chainmail. As gesture becomes mechanical through repetition, Bouchard distorts the initial sign in order to deploy a surface featuring objects with primitive accents and pieces of enigmatic fabric.
As this process removes the impulsive and animated gesture, the artist can feign to a certain tranquility commonly associated with slow and repetitive mechanisms. This analogy of the textile construction suggests the imprint of a coveted truce, a thirst for benevolence that emanates from an incessant questioning relative to the erosion of our certainties.
Recipient of several prizes, Elmyna Bouchard received in 2003 the Monique and Robert Parizeau Foundation Award, a prize given to a Quebec artist who has made a significant contribution to the field of printmaking. The artist has exhibited extensively in Quebec and Canada and her work has also been presented internationally, in China (Beijing), Thailand (Bangkok) and Belgium (Liège) among others.
