This work is concerned with several ‘great taboos’ in the Western culture: The viewing of sexually explicit imagery and the admission of doing so,
The viewing of male arousal and of male penetration, (The first Icon of this is in the Caves at Lascaux, France. It is a stick figure of a wounded hunter with his stick hard- on.), The Post-Rubens’ viewing of the fat nude (plump women and men of girth), and the replacement of Sagism by Techno-Youthism.

I am also concerned with the crosshatch between images of pornography with the classical Icons of Western Art.

In the beginning of photography, photographers, considering themselves to be ‘drawing with light’, adopted all of the modes of traditional Painting: Landscape, Still Life, Portrait (full length, three quarter, etc) and Docu-fiction. I use Docu-fiction to describe painters who reconstructed battles scenes, religious events, and/or the love affairs of the gods and goddesses. As painting progresses from cave paintings up to the invention of photography, there is a reinvestment of images and themes resulting in the building of a Great Western Art Iconic Image Bank. In the mid 19th Century, painting is liberated from its docu-obligations and painters are free to explore more abstract and/or personal interests. Some painters follow this track while others remain with docu-tradition.

Currently, when surfing the web, as if surfing tableaus or Stations of the Cross, there are specific images that refer back to the Great Western Art Iconic Image Bank. It is by the fusion of the surfed image and the Icon that these images for XXX/L are conceived. The original pieces to the series have titles like ‘Homage to Michelangelo or the Tuba Lesson’ or ‘Homage to Monet amongst the Water Lilies or the Piccolo Lesson’. There is a reference to High Art and a reference to ‘blags’ in common music or ‘gags’ in burlesque.

It is the Icon invested with my sixty-year-old, gay male, obese body that is at the core of this work.

I have taken incredible strength from my eighty-six year-old Mother, Margaret, who has commissioned me to do nudes of her from 2000 to the present. I have also taken solace from a new boyfriend who, upon meeting, said, “I love fat old men with beards”. “Well Hello, here I am!”
