Canadian. Born in Québec City, Canada (1949).
Lives and works in Québec City.
Irreducible – and sometimes insubordinate – painter, Richard Mill has established himself as one of the great artists of his time through a work of rare finesse, exceptional technique and strong intelligence.
In the past as well as today, Mill works almost exclusively on large formats: the painting is measured to the man in all its height.
From the large monochromatic black pantings of the 1970s to the colorful geometric compositions of the 1980s and the strong and assumed gesture of the mythological series of the 1990s and 2000s, Richard Mill never ceases to animate the surface, as he clearly understands the means and pitfalls of painting. The use of a reduced number of colors and the repetition of the motif are recurrent strategies in the artist’s practice. Mill paves the way for a great reflection on painting and does not hesitate to expand its field of action by the extension of its chassis or by the installation of sculptural elements that invest the entire space of exposure.
Born in Quebec City in 1949, Richard Mill lives and works there. Considered one of the most important painters of his generation, his works are part of major private, public and museum collections, namely those of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montreal, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Joliette Museum of Art, the Rimouski Regional Museum and the Canada Art Bank.
